Using data in GIS and CAD

Introduction

In our GIS help pages you will find guidance on some of the trickier tasks when using data from Digimap in Geographic Information Systems (GIS) or CAD software. It is beyond the scope of our support to provide detailed guidance on learning how to use GIS or CAD. We do signpost you to useful resources on learning GIS and CAD from the most popular software providers.

Is there free software available?

Your institution may already support and hold licences for GIS/CAD software. We recommend:

  1. First check with your teaching staff for advice on what is licensed and available at your institution.
  2. You can ask your local Digimap support staff for their advice. Check MyDigimap then MyCollections to find your local support information.

ArcGIS

ArcGIS is a widely used GIS from Esri. Desktop and online versions are available. A licence is required. Your institution may have an Esri/Chest site licence agreement.

QGIS

QGIS is a user friendly Open Source GIS, widely used in education. It runs on Linux, Unix, Mac OSX, Windows and Android and supports numerous vector, raster, and database formats and functionalities. Download the latest version from the QGIS website.

AutoCAD

Autodesk is a world leader in 3D design and engineering software for manufacturing, building and construction. A wide range of Autodesk software, including AutoCAD and AutoCAD Map 3D, is free for educational use and can be downloaded from the Autodesk website.
